How long does bacteriostatic water last?
There are two different clocks: the unopened expiry printed on the vial, and the in-use window that starts the moment you puncture the stopper.

The 4-week figure comes from the preservative's tested effectiveness for repeated punctures — not from the water going bad.
What shortens it
- Puncturing the stopper without wiping it first
- Leaving the vial at room temperature between draws
- Direct sunlight or a warm shelf
- Reusing needles between draws
When to discard
- Any cloudiness, colour, or visible particles
- A damaged, lifted, or cracked stopper
- Past the printed expiry, even if unopened
- Past your own in-use limit, even if it looks fine
Frequently asked questions
Does bacteriostatic water need refrigeration before opening?
Unopened vials are fine at room temperature away from light. Once punctured, refrigeration is the safer default.
What happens if I use it after 4 weeks?
The preservative's guaranteed effectiveness window has passed, so contamination risk rises. Standard laboratory practice is to discard and open a fresh vial.
